Each November, our junior and senior high students take part in Food-A-Thon, an activity designed to collect food for the needy. Students begin taking pledges and collecting food in closets, garages, and classrooms. While some donation pledges have been secured weeks earlier, a majority of the donations are collected the night of the activity.
The teens are divided into teams and some are sent door-to-door or store-to-store, asking people to donate food, while others stay behind to put together the collected food into pre-made boxes. The young couples from our church also participate in this activity by taking the boxes to needy families during the course of the night. When everyone returns, the points are totaled and the winning team is recognized. In past years, the school has collected anywhere from seven to ten tons of food.
